Industrial Services reach Safety Milestone

Wood’s Industrial Services service line has recently achieved a significant safety milestone.

With over 2000 employees in the service line work on sites across the UK and Ireland including shipyards and docks, offshore platforms, power stations, construction and manufacturing sites, Industrial Services have reached six million man hours with no recorded lost work cases.

A lost work case is a work related injury or illness which results in the injured person being absent from work for one or more days.

Craig Shanaghey, Senior Vice President, UK & Ireland for Industrial Services, commented: “Ensuring our people remain safe does not happen by chance – we plan for success by using the procedures in place and working together to keep safety at the forefront of our business.”

“Through a sustained investing in time, training and resources we have seen our safety observation report numbers from our employees reach more than 1000 each month- proactively preventing incidents and injuries through the monitoring, trending and management of both safe and unsafe behaviour.”

“Encouraging workforce engagement and everyone playing their part in accident and incident prevention with support from our supervision and leadership team has played an important part in our continued safety performance”.

Wood secures new framework agreement for nuclear decommissioning site at Dounreay

Wood has been awarded a new framework agreement by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) to provide industrial services for its nuclear decommissioning site in Thurso, Scotland.

Robin Watson, Wood’s chief executive, comments: “We will leverage our strong industrial services capability to support DSRL at one of the most complex nuclear closure sites in Europe.

“Our knowledge of providing industrial services to the energy, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries combined with our experience in working with stringent safety systems will ensure we deliver assurance in the installation and validation of electrical and control equipment on-site.”

This new framework agreement builds on Wood’s existing presence at Dounreay. Since 2015, Wood has worked on the design and construction of a new effluent treatment plant, provided the design, safety case and environmental assessment of a new higher activity waste store and a wide range of support under a professional services framework agreement.

How long have we been painting ships for the Royal Navy? http://woodgroup-isl.com/2016/02/15/how-long-have-we-been-painting-ships-for-the-royal-navy/ Mon, 15 Feb 2016 12:11:19 +0000 http://infinitedesigndev.com/woodgroup/?p=1445

How long have we been painting ships for the Royal Navy?

Wood Group Industrial Services has been the leading marine painting contractor for the Royal Navy for the past 20 years culminating in being awarded the contract in 2009 through Ship Support Services to provide all of the painting services on the new build project constructing the Royal Navy’s latest warships, the two Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. The lead vessel, HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to enter service in 2020 after two years of intensive sea trials.

At the end of 2015 Wood Group Industrial Services was also contracted by BAE Systems working at Portsmouth Dockyard to provide a range of painting services on HMS Victory, the famous flagship of the First Sea Lord, as part of her major refurbishment. The vessel is owned and maintained by The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Both vessels have their place in the record books. Displacing 3,500 tonnes and launched in May 1765, HMS Victory at 250 years old is the World’s oldest naval ship in commission, whereas HMS Queen Elizabeth will be the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy at 65,000 tonnes.

HMS Queen Elizabeth has a length of 280m compared to just under 70m for HMS Victory. Nevertheless as a sign of the times, the complement of HMS Queen Elizabeth is set to be a crew of only 733 compared to 850 that were serving aboard HMS Victory when she was at sea in the early 19th Century.

So, while both contracts were running, in 2015 Wood Group Industrial Services could proudly claim to have been providing specialist painting services on warships spanning over 250 years of Royal Navy history.

Wood Group Industrial Services 2014 Accounts are highlighted in The Journal http://woodgroup-isl.com/2015/06/24/hello-world/ http://woodgroup-isl.com/2015/06/24/hello-world/#respond Wed, 24 Jun 2015 11:10:41 +0000 http://localhost/themedivi/?p=1

Wood Group Industrial Services 2014 Accounts are highlighted in The Journal

Gateshead’s Wood Group Industrial Services boost sales by 29% on the back of Royal Navy deals. Additional work on Royal Navy aircraft carriers has taken the Gateshead firm to turnover topping £136m.

A buoyant supply of work across the marine, offshore and energy markets has steered a Tyneside industrial services firm to record turnover of £136.9m.

Accounts for 2014 published by Gateshead based Wood Group Industrial Services – formerly Pyeroy Group – reveal a successful year with a 29% sales lift, breaking its own record last year of £106.5m.

Pre-tax profits at the company, which also operates a subsidiary in Ireland, also rose by 45%, from £6m to £8.7m, representing a return on sales of 6.4%.

Net assets at the business also increased from £22.4m to £29.2m, while year-end cash balances were £28.1m compared to the previous year’s £16.6m.

Headcount grew significantly during the accounts period, from an average of 1,595 employees each month to 2,076, predominantly within production which had 469 more staff – a lift of 30%.

An analysis of the turnover showed UK sales accounted for almost all turnover with £134.89m, with European sales accounting for £2.04m.

The firm, which now forms part of the John Wood group following a buy-out in 2013, provides scaffolding and painting among a range of other services to industries including the rail, offshore energy, marine, utility, nuclear, chemical and process sectors.

Established in 1973, the firm said the increased level of activity dates back from contracts in 2013, due to additional volumes of work on a series of Royal Navy aircraft carriers, including HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Ocean, as well as new contracts secured in the process and energy sector.

The company’s forward order book at the end of the year also grew considerably, from £150m in 2013 to £192m in 2014.

In a strategic report accompanying the accounts, director Hugh Pelham said: “Customer spending in the company’s primary target markets – rail, offshore energy, marine, utility, process and energy – is expected to continue at comparable levels or increased levels compared with 2014.

“It is the company’s intent to increase its presence in the on-shore process and energy and offshore energy markets whilst retaining a strong presence in the rail and marine sectors.”

Directors did not recommend the payment of a dividend.

Work continues on HMS Queen Elizabeth

The Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers will be the biggest and most powerful warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy. When HMS Queen Elizabeth sets out from Rosyth Dockyard it will represent the very best that the United Kingdom can deliver.

Pyeroy, a Wood Group PSN company, has been working with the Aircraft Carrier Alliance and its partners to apply the latest MoD specified paint coatings during the build programme to protect and preserve this world-class carrier throughout its commission.

Our defence under attack
As soon as it leaves dry dock this enormous warship will come under attack from the same elements in which it is designed to operate.  The oceans will test it with the harshest weather and seawater environment, and operational duties will be a constant threat to the fabric of this vessel causing wear and tear leading to degradation and possible corrosion.

Pyeroy’s 25 years of marine protective coating experience has been fully employed in developing the surface preparation and application processes used to provide the highest quality finishes throughout the vessel. The external hull, decks and superstructure are all prepared to withstand the rigours of naval operations and protect the vessel in this most demanding environment, maintaining its reliability during a lifetime of service.

A military alliance
Competition brings out the best in us, but there are times when we recognise the advantages of joining forces to successfully pull together. Pyeroy Group established a Ship Support Services partnership with Cape, normally one of our strongest competitors, to deliver the very best capability to the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, providing the entire scaffold, painting and cleaning services in support of this flagship project.

Pushing the envelope
To deliver the protective coating application requirements for the two aircraft carriers, Pyeroy has been co-ordinating its services across seven shipyards covering Govan, Scotstoun, Portsmouth, Appledore, Birkenhead and Jarrow as well as the integration yard at Rosyth. Our workforce has increased to nearly 1,000 operatives dedicated to the QEC project and we are involved in applying over 25 different MoD specified coating systems amounting to over 1.5 million square metres of paintwork; an area slightly larger than London’s Hyde Park.
